Field Day Brings Fun in the Sun

Sunny skies greeted the beginning of RGS's annual Field Day on Friday, May 28. Classes were mixed into small multi-aged groups. Relay races, dozens of games, watermelon, popsicles, and even a beach was created on this especially fun end of the year celebration. Pictured above is fourth grader Sophie Bennett as she takes on Maureen Devlin in an outdoor water relay race. First grader Paul Recktenwald, top right, dons his Cubs gear and rounds the bases in a game of "Never Out." Kindergartner Alexander Moores, bottom right, balances a bean bag on his head while he scoots through the MAC during a relay race. Pictured below is third grader Bernice Talachy as her group enjoyed the parachute.

Bravo to Physical Education Specialist Sara McIntyre who orchestrated the morning and kept everything running smoothly.  Thanks are also in order for our Sixth Graders who ran each station and to the Fifth Graders who led their groups throughout the day.

Sixth Grade Heads West to Cottonwood Gulch

Last Monday, the sixth grade class packed themselves into vans with teachers Ahlum Scarola, Jennifer Jackson, Stu Pendleton, Mollie Parsons, and Maureen Devlin to spend four adventure-filled days in the mountains, caves, and canyons of western New Mexico.

Based at the Cottonwood Gulch camp in Thoreau, the class first explored the lava tube caves at El Malpais. On Tuesday, the students hiked in Slot Canyon before returning to camp. On Wednesday, the group set up camp at the base of Mount Taylor in preparation for Thursday morning's sunrise summiting of the sacred mountain, which is pictured below.

RGS Literary Magazine Debuts

RGS's inaugural literary magazine, Rio Good, is set to debut this week. The book has been orchestrated and edited by our fifth graders, who have worked hard on writing and collecting submissions from the rest of the school. Below is a special sneak peak at one of the many pieces of student work to be featured in the magazine.

"New World"
by Shintaro Ochiai, 5th Grade

Shintaro OchiaiMy heart was pounding the minute I stepped into the car. My stomach felt bubbly as if I had just chugged a gallon of Coca Cola. As my mom drove, it was so quiet in the car. You could feel the tension my brothers, sisters, and I were feeling. I was on my way to my first day at a real English speaking school. I was petrified!

We pulled up to the school, and I felt like I was paralyzed. I felt like a fish hooked to an anchor and dragged to shore. When I walked through the front door, I tried to stick to the wall like glue on paper, but Mom gripped my hand and pulled me to the classroom. CLICK HERE to read Shintaro's piece in its entirety.

Congratulations to all the contributors to this year's literary magazine, and look for copies to be distributed this week!

Congratulations to Learning Specialist Kerri Cottle, who recently took part in a competition through the American Iris Society and took home First Place for her arrangement based on a Santa Fe theme. She also won third place overall for her larger arrangement. Both winning arrangements are pictured below--the Santa Fe arrangement on the left, and the third place winner on the right.

RGS Alumna Erin Gaddis '98 received a B.S. in Psychology and a B.S. in Anthropology in 2009 from UNM.  She will be receiving her Master's in Elementary Education also from UNM late summer 2010.  Erin just accepted a position as a third grade teacher for the Navajo reservation school outside of Magdalena, NM.  Her goal is to someday teach at RGS!

Westy DavisFourth grader Westy Davis, Head of School for the Day last Friday, is pictured here composing a congratulatory email to the faculty and staff after a splendid GrandeFriends Day, as Mr. Underwood looks on. Westy was a terrific and fearless greeter of our guests!

Summer Reading Lists on Website

This summer, we want students to continue to read for pleasure in order to build and maintain this lifelong habit. Mrs. Steinman has developed a reading list, posted on the website, with suggested authors for different grade levels that may pique your child's interest. We encourage your child to keep a log of summer reading books, and we will celebrate summer reading at the first All School Meeting in August. CLICK HERE to see the list.
